아래 문장들은 조금씩 어색한 문장들입니다. 의미상 중복되는 단어가 들어가 있기 때문입니다. 아래에 중복되는 단어들은 괄호로 묶어 두었습니다. 괄호안에 있는 단어들은 Redundancy 들로서 생략되어야 합니다.

Fill in 과 Fill up 모두 ‘~에 채워넣다’ 라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 그러나, 쓰이는 용도는 조금 다릅니다.
fill in 은 ‘빈란을 채워놓다’, ‘양식을 채워넣다(작성하다)’ 라는 의미로 사용하는데 반해, fill up 은 ‘충만시키다’, ‘기름·가스등을 채워넣다’ 라는 의미에 사용합니다.
따라서, fill up the form은 어색한 문장이 되고 대신, fill in the form 이라고 해야 합니다. 한편, fill out the form 이라고 할 수 있는데, fill in 과 fill out 은 같은 뜻이라고 생각해도 무방합니다. in 과 out는 서로 반대되는 뜻은 갖고 있지만, fill in 과 fill out은 같은 뜻입니다.

영어 작문에서 redundancy는 쓸데 없는 표현 또는 중복 표현을 뜻합니다. 말하자면 우리말에서 ‘역전앞’ 이라고 하면 이상한 표현이 되는 것과 비슷합니다. ‘전’ 과 ‘앞’ 이 같은 말이므로 ‘역전’ 또는 ‘역앞’이라고 해야 하는 것이지요.
