영문 리포트나 에세이 작성 내용중 유난히 많이 보이는 문장이 I think~, 또는 It is~ 로 시작되는 문장입니다. 자신의 의견이나 생각을 표현하기 위해 이런 문장을 쓰는 경우가 많습니다. ibt 토플 Essay에도 많이들 쓰는 경향이 있지만, 사실은 좋은 표현이라고 볼 수는 없습니다. I think~ 로 시작되는 표현은 전문성이 결핍된 느낌을 주고, It is ~는 지나치게 단정적인 표현이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 대신 다음 문구를 기억해 두고 문맥에 맞게 적용하면 조금 더 전문적이면서 고급스런 표현을 만들 수 있습니다.

  = He is reported to have been killed on the street.
• It seems that she was gorgeous in her day.
  = She seems to have been gorgeous in her day.
• It happened that I met Mary in the theater.
  = I happened to meet Mary in the theater.

It is said~, It is reported~ 는 저널리즘에서 자주 쓰이는 표현이고, 대학이나 대학원 리포트라면 It seems~ 를 쓰는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다.
